Woke Self-Own: Assassin’s Creed Shadows

A few weeks ago the trailer of the next Assassin’s Creed game dropped. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows plays in Japan. Of course, this being a game by a Western company, Ubisoft, you can play as either a black man or a woman. There was no black samurai. There are records of a black sword-carrier (!) named Yasuke. Of course, this is not good enough for Ubisoft, so Yasuke is the main protagonist and has to slaughter countless Japanese warriors.

The setup of this game is a wonderful example of the self-defeating nature of wokism. While the white man has been educated to accept the black man as his superior, at least in sports and advertising, the Japanese have a long way to go. Having a black main protagonist mow down hundreds of honorary-white Japanese soldiers is about as realistic as thousands of prime-caliber white women having kids with black men. As a consequence, the appeal of such a media product is extremely limited. This game is a product in search of a customer base.

The main gaming audience in the triple-A space are white men. White men are not going to line up to play as a black dude in Japan. The Japanese do not care much about Western games anyway, albeit there is a modicum of interest in some franchises. GTA V has done quite well in Japan, and so have The Witcher III, and Ghost of Tsushima. Lastly, I do not think that black men are going to buy Assassin’s Creed: Shadows either. I cannot even find much data on what kind of games black players like but I have the impression that they really are into fighting games, albeit they somehow cannot reach the highest levels. Thus, the question has to be asked why a game like Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is even being made. Ubisoft may take a heavy blow if this game underdelivers, which it most certainly will. BlackRock has deep pockets but they are not so deep that they can prop up every Western game studio. At some point, such slop has to sell in order to keep game studios going, but it just does not. You could almost wonder if wokeism is being forced upon Western studios in order to financially ruin them, similar to how the Europeans are kneecapping their car industry by demanding a switch to electromobility.
