An Encounter with an Arrogant Fat Chick

At a conference I recently attended, I witnessed some rather peculiar dynamics between a pretty overweight woman and her male orbiters. From the previous statement you can probably deduce that I had ended up at a genuine sausage fest, a tech conference, and those have a male/female split worse than the worst club or bar you have ever been to.

Commercial tech conferences, as opposed to academic ones, have a pretty simple structure. On the one hand, there are multiple areas for lectures, ranging from small meeting rooms to big auditoria, and on the other, there are one or more areas for establishing business contacts. This means that there is one booth after another in large open spaces. These booths are normally manned by one or two at least moderately attractive women, who hand out flyers and baubles, and a bunch of geeks in case someone asks a technical question.

Normally, there is a degree of professionalism at such events. Quite frankly, very often the men at those booths do not seem to care much about their female colleagues from HR, and some even look as if they are embarrassed by them. Yet, one one booth there was aforementioned heavy woman who was bordering on the obese. Yet, she took a leaf out of the playbook of third-rate e-thots who lack the looks but are so fat that it also caused their tits to become a bit bigger. In order to draw attention to her figure, she squeezed herself into a tight dress, which made her look like a walking sausage.

This woman had one of the worst cases of resting bitch face I ever encountered, and the men around her seemed starstruck. It probably did not help that the men at that booth both hailed from rather emasculated demographics. One was a frail white soy-boy, and the other two spoke with an Indian accent. As you know, Indian men like “bobs and vagene”, in particular a white woman’s.

Even though we are well past the point where our social engineers have normalized that women no longer need to be slim, all while holding men to ever-higher standards, it is nonetheless baffling how much well this mainstream media campaign has worked with women. This is also tragic because this particular woman seemed to have a relatively pleasant facial bone structure, and had she made an effort to slim down or, better yet, learned to put the fork down instead of having a second meal for lunch and dinner, she could get a lot more out of life.

It is one thing for a woman to have some soy-boy faggot and “bobs and vagene”-deprived Indian men fawn over her, due to a seemingly complete lack of alternatives, and quite another if a woman is able to enter a room and really draw the attention of men. Not overeating could have put this woman into a decent customer-facing role at a well-funded start-up or an established corporation, instead of a crappy startup that will probably collapse within a year or two. Yet, the path of least resistance is too tempting. In the end, those women only harm themselves, but weak men, to some extent, prevent them from realizing this.

  1. in my experience being obese has more to do with getting a slow metabolism by eating junk or nasty stuff like seed oils, than with eating in excess, with a robust metabolism you can eat a lot and your body simply burn the excess, with a slow (torpor) metabolism even eating little you can gain fat weight.

    1. Did people also have a problem with their slow metabolism twenty years ago? To me, arguments like yours simply sound like lame excuses. It is undeniable that people are getting fatter and fatter, and it I take your position at face value, the message would be that there are some factors that are somewhat out of control of all those poor men and women who just happen to pack on pounds like crazy, and of course it is too much to ask of them to just eat less. A competitive hypothesis to yours is that those people have some kind of hormonal imbalance that makes them fat. In contrast, a simple calories in/calories out model explains pretty well why there are so many fat people around nowadays.

    2. Like Aaron said, mostly an excuse. This topic has been studied more times than I can count. Individual metabolisms, contrary to popular belief, don’t vary that much and aren’t that easily affected.

(Assuming we are talking about healthy adults without metabolic disorders – those still growing and those who have metabolic disorders are another thing altogether.)

      CQV & Aaron:
Well, you never know – it might be one of P Ray’s ladyboys. 😉

    3. Metabolisms (bmr*) don’t wary much, but genetic differences in satiety are a real thing, and vary quite a lot. Some of us have those genes to eat up to a higher setpoint.

So how come obesity is a new thing if genetics differ, did they start differing now?

Well no, the availability of super easy-to-get food is a new development. But those genetic differences of people who are evolved to eat all the available food are pretty old.

*-Also, there are plenty of differences, due to differing rates of NEAT. Again, a very real thing. Believe it or not, but naturally skinny people tend to spend more calories than others, even if they don’t do exercise.

So yes, the naturally skinny person doesn’t have a faster BMR (base metabolism) than their fat friends, but most of the time they DO have a higher RMR, and especially higher non-exercise expenditure (NEAT), which means that if both people eat the SAME exact amount of food, and neither exercises at all, they can have a difference in weight, due to NEAT.

the naturally skinny person doesn’t have a faster BMR (base metabolism) than their fat friends, but most of the time they DO have a higher RMR, and especially higher non-exercise expenditure (NEAT)

The end result is the as-if they had a higher metabolism, in practical terms. So while the metabolism (in the literal sense) doesn’t explain weight difference, metabolism does.

    4. I correctly predicted that Novy would jump in. As someone who has high satiety, he might bring forth some insights.

    5. “Believe it or not, but naturally skinny people tend to spend more calories than others, even if they don’t do exercise.”

I recall reading somewhere that naturally skinny people tend to burn a lot of calories which end up being converted into heat. And also, that they tend to spend a lot of calories even while idle through activities like fidgeting, for example.

    6. I recall reading somewhere that naturally skinny people tend to burn a lot of calories which end up being converted into heat. And also, that they tend to spend a lot of calories even while idle through activities like fidgeting, for example.

The technical term is NEAT. And yes, skinny people have much higher NEAT than overweight people. Yet many pat themselves on the back as if they were morally superior. NEAT is genetic and not done conciously.

    7. To represent this in mathematical terms, let’s assume two people of equal height, have an equal BMR, and equal RMR (equal lifestyle)

However, Bob spends an extra 300 kcal through additional NEAT over

      – Bob has a metabolism (BMR) of 2000kcal and RMR of 2500
      – John has a metabolism (BMR) of 2000kcal and RMR of 2800

If they both eat the exact same amount of averaged calories, i.e. 2500 a day, one will weigh a 100 kilos, the other will weigh 80 kilograms.

One is normal weight, the other is overweight, getting close to obese. And that’s just from NEAT ALONE.

For some weird reason, people look at at a person who weights 30% more and fantasize that he eats triple the food. But that’s mathematically absurd.

All else being equal, with two people where one weighs 30% more, it means he eats 30% more, not 300% more. And that’s if all else is equal. If one has a higher neat, they can eat the same, and yet one weighs 30% more.

    8. Oh, okay. I looked it up. I do a lot of that stuff unconsciously to the point where it sometimes annoys people, like tapping out a rhythm on a desk. I’ve noticed myself as I walk by an object and I’ll reach out and tap my fingers in succession against it. Not in a compulsive way either, as in there is no voice speaking to me telling me to do weird shit like, “walk up to that tree and circle around it before touching the bark with your index finger and holding it there until the count of 3.” Also, when I’m doing a good bulk and in a calorie surplus I feel much warmer than normal.

    9. Also, when I’m doing a good bulk and in a calorie surplus I feel much warmer than normal.

Yes, that’s also a sign of this. Some people are wired to feel antsy if they eat a surplus. They start fidgeting more, their body is literally fighting off the surplus, and their NEAT increases.

This is in contradiction to the opposite genetic type where eating a surplus makes you relaxed and actually lowers your NEAT. You want to just sit down and stand still and process the surplus. Which widens the gap between people of each genetic type and what happens to them with a surplus.

  2. ” A competitive hypothesis to yours is that those people have some kind of hormonal imbalance that makes them fat.”

I have heard that spending much time indoors under florescent lighting slows one’s metabolism and this is actually used to fatten live stock. If this is true, then getting natural light should do wonders to one’s waste line.

Does anyone hear watch the hubberman podcast? Wonder what you goys think of him?

  3. Honestly, much of the blame for the obesity epidemic lies in society. Unfortunately,I have come to learn that food in modern society comes in 3 qualities:

    – Cheap
    – Healthy
    – Delicious

BUT…you can only choose two. You cannot have all 3 qualities. I’m sure everyone agrees here that modern society fucks up on so many levels, but how the hell can you raise a healthy society when good food that is actually delicious (and most importantly; Satiating) is much more expensive than Fast Food? Greed really is the root of all evil.

And another excellent demonstration of that is the rampant misinformation in mainstream fitness industry. Just look at this:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=as1xsMy0G7A

I personally WENT through this kind of experience myself in the past, and there is no better way to turn people off of fitness (if not scaring them from even trying in the first place. I fucking hate mainstream TV shows like The Biggest Loser and Dr. Now. As if painful extreme workouts and eating less than 1200 calories per day is the only way to lose weight..) than making them suffer through torturous, dangerous, and idiotic workouts like these. People could end up in the ER doing shit like this.

By the way,you guys should check out his other videos. I’m sure you will all love him. I certainly did, haha.

Alek,I’m sure you already get everything I’m saying here. None of what I said here is meant as an excuse. I’ve currently already lost 34 lbs and will be continuing with it. I’ve been fortunate enough to find that there’s a relatively cheap gym close to where I am now. I’m eating healthy delicious meals that I like and are satiating, but unfortunately,it definitely costs us more to maintain this. I’m tired of being fat though,so I’ll put up with it for as long as we can afford. But its such an injustice that good delicious food has to be so expensive.

Aaron, you’ve mentioned before that there’s greed in the Medical industry as well. Perhaps making it difficult to actually live a healthy life so folks will be forced on regular medication is part of the reason for the way things are right now. Its sad.

    1. The YouTube channel “Think Before You Sleep” seems vaguely familiar. I have probably come across it at some point, but I don’t think I ever dug deep into the available content. This video I quite enjoyed:

Even though the focus is on a small-business owner couple losing their shit on camera, there are some good lessons about dealing with women in it as well, primarily it is that if you tolerate abuse, you will only get more of it.

By the way, there is a little surprise at the end: the psychotic husband runs into “immigration issues” and moves to Israel in response. This gave me a good chuckle.

EDIT: This video, which compares a traditional housewife with a woke one, is also pretty good:

    2. – Cheap
      – Healthy
      – Delicious

      BUT…you can only choose two

That’s a very clever way of putting it and definitely true. Cheap healthy food does taste like cardboard. Not exactly fun food. Whereas food that’s fun and healthy is expensive.

This also plays into the previous discussion about differences. If you use food for emotional reasons, you need more fun in your food to feel satisfied.
